Meet Teresa for Black History Month
We’re delighted to support initiatives such as Black History Month (BHM) to help encourage a sharing of experiences and culture. BHM gives us chance to focus on and celebrate the contribution of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people in our society and develop our understanding of Black history in general. Every week during October we will be focusing on a different Reading Buses employee and their experiences – this week it's Teresa's turn, bus driver and part time cash office clerk.
Teresa's Story
The time of year has come around again in which I find myself meandering through the month of October enjoying BHM. I always look forward to the interesting facts that come to light each year.
As a child of two West Indian descendants, culture has had a prominent place in my upbringing. Born in London, my family moved to Berkshire whilst I was still young. My childhood was always fun and carefree.
It wasn’t until my years at senior school that racism reared its ugly head. Most hurtful when I look back, was the fact that it came not from my fellow pupils but from the adults.
Being a victim of racism in whatever form can be a hurtful experience. However, throughout the years, and especially this year having witnessed the unity of all races to fight against injustice, gives me great hope for future generations.
My years at Reading Buses (8 to date) have been an enlightening experience. The diversity of drivers is truly amazing. I have had the pleasure of listening to stories, tasting traditional cuisine and generally immersing myself in the knowledge that I have gained about the huge variety of cultures.
I do strongly believe that knowledge is the key to understanding and respecting each other regardless of who we are
I look forward to the days when we can again come together as staff from all departments to enjoy the culinary cuisine of a variety of cultures as we have done before.
I end my article by saying how important it is that people from all races have the opportunity to explore their culture and history and use that knowledge as a platform of inspiration that will help them to achieve their dreams and reach their goals despite obstacles that may be placed in their path.
Happy Black History Month to all!
