Meet our Star of the Year for 2019
Every year our team does incredible things to keep Reading and the surrounding area moving, and every year we like to celebrate these achievements.
On Saturday 26 January, we held our annual 'Night with the Stars' - our celebration of our people and the night where we crown our Star of the Year!
Each year we name one Driving Star, one Support Star and one Engineering Star - the winners of which then go on to compete against each other for the overall title of Star of the Year!
Martin is our Star
Martin Rafferty took the driving Star of the Year accolade and then went on to be named our overall Star of the Year.
Martin has worked for the us for just over seven years and is a brilliant driver, role model and ambassador for us. He is the embodiment of someone who truly loves what they do.
He has the skills, knowledge and attitude to respond professionally in all situations. Martin also possesses a great work record, as well as always being always positive, helpful and accommodating.
Martin was nominated for Star of the Month in December when he helped a customer who needed medical attention on his bus. Martin had been covering a shift on the Green Line 702 service when a customer was taken seriously ill. He helped to make the customer comfortable and maintained their dignity throughout, something that another customer thought worthy of praise.
Alongside this incident, Martin was also commended for his great all-round record including a gold Drivewell score – a system we use that helps drivers to give a smoother driving experience to customers, reduces the amount of fuel they use and avoids accidents. Martin had the great combination of going above and beyond in his daily duties as well as consistently excellent performance.
Massive congratulations to Martin – our new Star of the Year. Martin is a great role model for all and we know he will be a great ambassador for the company in the coming year
Paul is our support star
Our Support Star of the Year was Paul Comley, Newbury Supervisor, who won the award for demonstrating outstanding commitment and sustained dedication to the success of the Newbury based operation.
Paul has worked for the company for 29 years, and has single-handedly organised special events services as well as supporting the reputation and income of our Newbury Depot. He has been highly commended for having an overall excellent record.
Leon is our engineering star
Engineering Star, Leon Emmett, has worked for the company for around five years. He was rewarded for being a great team member with a brilliant can-do attitude to everything.
He helped improve the general maintenance of Newbury Depot with a proactive and positive approach.
long service, retirees, qualifications and more
It's not just about the 'stars' on the night though. At the glitzy ceremony hosted by our Chief Executive Officer, Robert Williams, presented all the stars with their certificates and announced the overall Star of the Year.
In addition to their stars, the evening was also about recognising people with significant contributions to the company - we celebrated our retirees, employees who had been involved fundraising for our Charity of the Year, employees who had completed professional qualifications and our long-service employees - which this year included someone who has been with us for 50 years!
The night is about celebrating our people and the great things they do – something that was brilliantly summed up with Martin’s win.
