Meet Kerry for International Women's Day
For International Women's Day, on Sunday 8 March, we thought it would be great to showcase some of our fabulous female workers leading up to the day! Each of our featured employees were given some questions about themselves so you could get to know them better and see what amazing women we have working for us.
Meet Kerry Davey, our Engineering Administrator.
How long you have worked for the company?
I've been here for 15 years now.
What job did you do before Reading Buses?
I worked for social services before Reading Buses, I also run my own personal development coaching business.
What is the best thing about working at Reading Buses?
I love the flexibility the company offers me to combine motherhood, career and passion. Being the in-house coach allows me to work with other members of staff from different departments enabling them to reach their own potential, diversifying my own role gives me variety that keeps me interested and motivated.
Who is your biggest female role model?
My biggest female role model is probably Oprah, she displays constant compassion and kindness and a desire to improve everyone’s sense of self.
What would you say to other women wanting to work in the bus industry?
I’d say don’t be intimidated, the tide is turning and there is room for everyone who has a passion to get the job done and constantly strive to deliver the best service possible.
What challenges have you had at work and how have you overcome them?
Covering Engineering Manager was my biggest challenge having no technical experience, I overcame this by focusing on the people and the processes, the pool of knowledge and skill that we have in the engineering department is staggering, all it took was knowing how to encourage staff to have the confidence in their own abilities and learn to work together with management in a collaborative way rather than a hierarchy. The results were a happier, more productive and confident team.
How do you make sure that you maintain a work-life balance?
Maintaining a work life balance is easy with the flexibility Reading Buses offers, I have never missed a school assembly or parents evening making up the hours where needed.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?
I don’t make five year plans – sorry! Everyday I wake up ready to do my best, be open to opportunities and make my corner of the world a nicer place to be for everyone.
