125 years of Reading Buses display

Today Fri 11th Sep 2026

On Sunday 4 October, we are taking over Broad Street in Reading to showcase buses throughout the decades to celebrate our 125th year of operation.

Formed on 31 October 1901 as Reading Corporation Tramways to electrify the town's horse-drawn tramway, we began a story that has seen us shape transport in Reading into what it is today.

buses

Starting from the junction of West Street and Broad Street Mall, we will have buses throughout the decades as you walk down Broad Street, finishing with one of our latest electric buses near the Oracle, decorated to celebrate our 125 years. There will be buses and a trolleybus representing the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2020s. As you walk down Broad Street, you will be able to see first-hand at how our buses have developed over the years, culminating in the latest technology and comfort. You will see the character of the older buses and how they evolved into what we are used to today!

running day

There will also be a free running day with vintage buses providing trips from St Mary's Butts and following historic routes around the town. All of the vintage buses are in private ownership and have had much time and effort put into their restoration. We are very grateful to their owners for making them available. Special thanks to the Thames Valley & Great Western Omnibus Trust www.tvagwot.org.uk for organising the running day.

entertainment

As part of the day's entertainment, we are delighted to have music inspired by the decades the buses represent. More information on the acts will follow closer to the event.

commemorative memorabilia

There will also be a chance to buy commemorative memorabilia to mark our 125th year. There will be a limited edition set of commemorative mugs, including a special gold mug that will be available in the set and on its own, and a new book charting the history of the company and every bus operated over the 125 years. There will also be other Reading Buses merchandise to buy on the day as well!

We can't wait for the day to come around and we hope you all come into Reading and enjoy a wonderful day celebrating one of the great institutions of the town - us!
