More buses as we start to get back to normal

1 month ago Thu 18th Jun 2020

With non-essential shops now open and further restrictions being lifted to allow pubs, cinemas and other premises to open from Saturday 4 July, we have been working hard to ensure that we can help everyone who needs to get the bus. Since non-essential shops were allowed to open from 15 June, we have seen a small increase in customer numbers on our services, which have now gone from 10% of normal to around 20% - climbing slowly and steadily as different restrictions have been lifted.

With that in mind, we are looking to increase most routes back to, roughly, their normal service levels. However, this does take into account that there may still be the need for social distancing so we are not expecting customer numbers to be back to normal levels - as two metre social distancing will still be in place with the new 'one metre plus' rule only applying if two metres is not possible.

what is changing?

From Monday 6 July, most (but not all) routes will be running to higher frequencies than throughout the last few months - with many returning to their previous 'normal' levels. The table below gives you an idea of what is happening with each route.

Reading Bridge closure

Reading Bridge has been closed for up to six weeks for gas main replacement works from Monday 29 June. This will affect all our services north of the river in some capacity. We will be using spare buses and drivers to limit the impact to customers, but we appreciate your patience whilst these works are ongoing.

notable changes

Whilst most routes are going back to normal, albeit with some timetable tweaks, there are some routes that have further changes to them.

Bath Road services:

We are looking at ensuring there is a better spread of buses along the common section of the Bath Road made up of jet black, lime 2/2a and yellow 26. Some journeys will be moved a few minutes, others may be moved by more.

suspended evening/Sunday journeys:

On some routes, we are suspending some evening and Sunday journeys as we do not expect these to be well used until all restrictions, including social distancing, are lifted by the Government.

pink 22:

The route towards the town centre will be made more direct, no longer using Station North. Buses will run directly to Friar Street via Caversham Road, but will call into the Station’s South interchange on Station Hill before 9am Monday-Friday for commuters. Outside of this, you can stay on the bus until it comes to Blagrave Street (Apex Plaza) for the main entrance to the station - although you may find it quicker to get off at Caversham Road Fire Station and walk.

Most buses will depart around 15 minutes later than normal to improve the spacing of services between Reading and Caversham Centre, although arrival times in Reading before 9am have been kept as similar as possible.

The last bus in the evening will now be at 8.40pm, and the Sunday service will be suspended. Berry 23/24 provides an alternative to get to Caversham Centre as this is the main use of these buses at these times.

Buses to and from Caversham Bridge will run directly to Friar Street using Blagrave Street instead of Station North. This change is to allow more time for congestion on Caversham Bridge due to the proposed roadworks closing Reading Bridge.

There are also some timetable amendments to improve the spacing between the various Caversham routes to give customers more choice of buses. Berry 23 buses will change on Sundays to match Monday-Saturday departure times. Berry 24 buses will run roughly 5 minutes earlier than present Mondays-Saturdays, and 20 minutes earlier on Sundays.

pink 25:

Buses leaving Reading will no longer divert into Station North – customers from the Station can use the stop in Blagrave Street (Apex Plaza) instead. This will be reviewed in the future should the one-way system be removed.

Most buses will depart roughly 10 minutes later than normal to improve the spacing of services over Reading Bridge, although arrival times in Reading before 9am have been kept as similar as possible. Please note, roadworks will close Reading Bridge for up to six weeks so buses will use Caversham Bridge instead.

little berries 27/29:

Route 27 buses from town will become additional route 29 buses direct to Amersham Road. This gives a regular 30-minute frequency to Amersham Road departing from the same stop on Friar Street. Connections from Central Caversham to Amersham Road will be maintained by travelling into Reading and remaining on the bus to Amersham Road.

Timetables are being updated as soon as they become available.
