Become a bus driver with us

Work for us and love driving the bus!

Is it time for you to reevaluate your career? Over the years we have had plenty of new drivers who have come from a range of different jobs - from teaching to housekeeping or from distribution management to the army, we've seen people come from vocational backgrounds, offices, customer service roles and beyond.

So what's stopping you?

If you like people, giving great customer service and want to join a company that really makes a difference to the local community, then apply now!

the role

We're looking for friendly, caring and confident people who are passionate about customer service to join our amazing team as bus drivers in and around Reading.

All you need is a can-do, customer focused attitude and a clean car licence. Our Academy will train you to help you get your bus (PCV) licence and your professional development will continue throughout your employment. It really is similar to driving a car, just a bit bigger! We'll help you go from having never driven a bus to passing your test, so you can help people get around Reading with a smile.

We offer competitive rates of pay – after successful training drivers join our starter rota (we call it the midi-bus rota) where the basic salary is around £26,000 rising to £30,000+ when you become part of the main rota - with plenty of opportunity for increasing this with overtime.

During the 5-6 week training period the pay is around £410 per week rising to a basic £480 per week when you move to the midi-bus rota and there is a guaranteed minimum of £551 a week when you reach on our main rota.

Other great benefits include;

  • performance bonus
  • pension scheme
  • high street discounts
  • generous holiday allowance
  • free travel on Reading Buses and sister companies for you (plus partner after completing probationary period)
  • smart uniform
  • the opportunity to work for an award-winning bus company!

Working pattern

Our full time roles usually involve working 5 days out of 7, with regular weekends off or equivalent days off in the week. Once you have completed your probationary period on the starter rota, we have a variety of rotas covering different types of route and working patterns (popular rotas are subject to a waiting list!).

We also offer part time roles, either working fewer days per week with an equal proportion of weekend work, or shorter days, especially afternoons from around 2pm-8pm. We can also offer school term-time-only contracts.
