At a glitzy ceremony at the Aldermaston Manor Hotel, bus driver Chris Mocko became a ‘star’.
In front of an audience of past and present Reading Transport employees, Chris took the top honour of ‘Star of the Year for 2011’.
To great acclaim he was presented with his award by Reading Transport’s Chairman David Sutton, at Saturday night’s glittering ‘A Night with the Stars’ event.
Some 28 past and present Reading Transport employees were special guests with the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Debs Edwards, as an ‘extra special’ guest.
All had reason to celebrate during 2011. There were five retirees, of whom one, Glynne Davies, had completed 37 years with the company when he retired in September. In addition 10 guests had gained their NVQ Level 3 qualifications while the other people present had all received awards for being Reading Transport’s ‘Star of the Month’.
Every year one of these stars is selected to be the ‘Star of the Year’. Said Mr. Freeman: “Each ‘star’ has done something very special or carried out their normal duties in a particularly excellent way.“We have had another year of extraordinary people doing extraordinary things and we have had a wonderful crop of stars each month. Choosing one overall winner from the group was a difficult task as they are all people who have excelled in their role and in their contribution to the continuing success of Reading Transport.”
He went on: “The panel has chosen someone in the frontline who is an excellent ambassador for the business, dealing with customers and providing outstanding customer service.
“It is always very difficult to choose the person with particularly outstanding achievement to celebrate. But our ‘Star of the Year for 2011’ saw an emergency situation and decided to take positive action, potentially saving the life of a man who had fallen by the wayside.”
To a captivated audience he announced the winner: Chris Mocko.
Mr. Freeman explained: “He noticed that someone had fallen near his stationary bus. He made the bus secure and advis
ed his passengers what was going on before calling the emergency services to the scene.
“He then made the patient comfortable and stayed with them until the ambulance arrived. He was commended by the emergency services for his quick thinking and decisive action.
“When he was satisfied that everything was in order, Chris calmly returned to his bus, carried on in service ensuring all passengers got safely to their destinations without significant delay.
“This was an excellent example of how members of the Reading Transport team respond under pressure. Chris is a worthy ‘Star of the year’ for Reading Transport, Mr. Freeman added.
