It's official!

We are absolutely delighted to tell you all that we officially have the UK's best bus driver - Maks Pruszewicz!

Some of you will remember that Maks was voted as our Star of the Year at our glittering employee awards ceremony in January. He was then subsequently shortlisted for 'Top National Bus Driver' at the prestigious UK Bus Awards in October and has now won Gold in this highly competitive category on Tuesday 21 November.

UK Bus Awards success

It was a great day at the UK Bus Awards (often referred to as the “Bus Oscars”) as two of our employees won Gold!

Maks was, of course, voted Top National Bus Driver and, equally fantastically, our Head of Operations Dan Bassett won Young Manager of the Year.

Both successes are a first for us in these categories.

These wins come alongside a Silver Award for the New Horizons Award for our digital technology strategy, including smartphone app, and a finalist’s place for the Putting Passengers First Award for our reinvention of the royal blue and orange buses.

Maks - the best bus driver

Maks was understandably thrilled with his win and said, “I am overwhelmed and so very honoured.  This award is not for myself, but for Team Reading Buses.” He was then surprised with an interview with Chris Evans on his Radio Two breakfast show - you can listen to the show here

*(please note this is an external link and you may need a BBC ID to listen. Maks' interview begins at around the 2:09 mark.)

The judges recognised that Maks has found a job and a company he loves. They said it shines through every day in his work, which helped him to become the Reading Buses Driver of the Year as well as taking our coveted Star of the Year accolade.

He is well liked by customers and has accumulated a huge pile of customer compliments as well as being well liked by his work colleagues.

Maks also regularly attains excellent scores on our mystery traveller reports, and has an exemplary driving record.

We are so proud of Maks and his win!

Dan - the best Young Manager

Of course, it wasn't just Maks celebrating as Dan Bassett took the Young Manager title after narrowly missing out last year - he was equally as delighted with his win.  “I am absolutely thrilled and this award truly reflects the whole operation at Reading Buses – I couldn’t be sat here as a winner today without the support of a fantastic operations team and great set of drivers, especially given that we now have the UK’s best bus driver in Maks!”

The UK Bus Awards judges said Dan impressed them as a well-rounded manager with a big emphasis on the importance of people, both staff and customers, in the organisation and that his focus in his current role as Head of Operations was on reliability and punctuality which is bringing benefits to customers in a very challenging environment.

success down to people

We really care about people here at Reading Buses, whether it’s our customers or employees.

We are immensely proud of both Maks and Dan's superb achievements. These award wins come hot on the heels of our recent Pride of Reading 'Business in Action' award win which recognised, amongst other things, the fantastic charitable work of our team and, earlier in the year, our win at both the regional and national Venus Awards for our work to encourage and support more women in the bus industry.

We hope you all give Maks a big smile and congratulations when you see him next - he will be sure to respond with an even bigger smile of his own!
